Background
The Council hosted an open symposium on the latest approaches to grid-scale energy storage for integrating renewable resources on February 13, 2003.
Presentations included a panel discussion on Snohomish PUD’s project to deploy a one-megawatt battery storage system at one of its substations. The project aims to help integrate renewable energy and improve system reliability. Project partners include 1Energy Systems, Alstom Grid, and the University of Washington. Panelists include:Steve Klein, Snohomish PUD general manager and Craig Collar, assistant general manager; David Kaplan, CEO of 1Energy Systems; and representatives from the Alstom Group and the University of Washington.
Also presenting:
Craig Wilkins of Zinc Air Inc. Based in Columbia Falls, Montana, the company’s zinc flow batteries are designed to be environmentally friendly. The company focuses on grid storage applications for energy peak shifting and renewables (solar/wind) integration.
James Kelly of ARES. Based in Santa Barbara, California, its advanced rail storage technology leverages the efficiencies of rail transport to provide grid-scale energy storage.
Lee Hall of the Bonneville Power Administration. Bonneville has been exploring the potential for electricity customers to provide energy storage to the grid. Loads that have been or are being tested include electric water heating, refrigerated warehouses, and data centers.
